Levi Mele (Vernal, Utah/Uintah) won back-to-back Big Ten dual matches on the final weekend of the regular season, beginning with an 8-4 decision of Wisconsin’s Drew Hammen Friday. On Sunday, Mele selflessly moved up two weight classes to 141 pounds to help NU secure a 20-16 victory over Michigan. Trailing 5-3, Mele notched a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining before getting the winning takedown early in the sudden victory period.

Resilient Wildcats Claw Past Wolverines, 20-16, in Dual Match Finale
Six NU grapplers notch wins to give Tim Cysewski a victory in his last dual as head coach

Excerpts:
EVANSTON, Ill. -- On a night with so many distinguished alumni of Northwestern wrestling in the seats at Welsh-Ryan Arena, the current Wildcats gutted out a remarkable 20-16 victory over Michigan Sunday for their first Big Ten dual win of the season. The win put the finishing touches on a special evening on which NU honored Tim Cysewski, who coached his final dual as head coach after 20 years in that role.

Despite being challenged much of the season by a lineup depleted by injuries, Northwestern battled to the end for Cysewski on Sunday, winning four individual bouts by three points or less to claw out the dual win. Cysewski, who next season will make the move to the role of associate head coach at NU, ends his head coaching tenure as the winningest coach in program history with 155 dual victories.

The evening featured a rousing ceremony during intermission to honor Cysewski, which featured appearances from former Northwestern All-Americans Jack Griffin, Mike Funk, Brad Traviolia and Dustin Fox.

The action remained fast and furious in the 141-pound bout, where Levi Mele wrestled up two weight classes from his usual 125-pound spot to take on Michigan's Mark Weber. Weber held a 5-3 edge late in the contest when Mele went in for a takedown, bringing the NU faithful to their feet. Mele fed off their energy in the sudden victory period, getting the winning takedown just 20 seconds into the match and improving to 3-4 in Big Ten action for his freshman season.

NU's final crucial win came courtesy of Brian Roddy, Jr. at 174, who knocked off Justin Zeerip 4-2. Zeerip came into the match with a season record of 25-16. Roddy's fourth Big Ten victory this year gave NU an insurmountable 20-7 team lead with two matches remaining. Michigan (4-15, 0-8) claimed wins in both of those matches but it was too little too late as the Wildcats held on for a most memorable victory.

Wrestling: Northwestern wins final match for coach
The Daily Northwestern

Excerpts:
After losing to Wisconsin 32-6, NU went into a matchup of the Big Ten’s two bottom teams, with the loser ending the season winless in conference play. The Wolverines held an early 4-0 lead, but NU junior Bobby Joyce (125), who returned from a broken hand, took down the Wolverines’ Sean Boyle to come within one. Then the Cats picked up two crucial wins to turn the momentum in their favor.
Senior Eric Metzler (133) started things off by taking down Michigan’s Zac Stevens in a come-from-behind win that had the crowd on its feet. Then, freshman Levi Mele (141), who normally wrestles two weight classes down in the 125-pound weight division, earned NU another comeback victory by overcoming Michigan’s Mark Weber 6-5 in sudden death overtime. Mele celebrated by pumping his fist and jumping up and down, energizing the home crowd eager for a win.
“There’s nothing better than that feeling,” Mele said. “It reminded me of when I took state sophomore year in high school. After getting that final takedown in overtime, it was such a good way to win because you know you earned it.”……
Much of the night focused on Cysewski, who is the program’s all-time winningest coach. He was honored at halftime with a presentation from Athletic Director Jim Phillips, who was accompanied by several of Cysewski’s former All-American wrestlers. While Cysewski didn’t want the limelight on himself, his players recognized his significance to the program.
“Tim is an amazing coach,” Mele said. “I appreciate everything he does and he’s still going to be around the program helping us out. I could see most of us wrestled with greater desire and passion because of him.”
Cysewski, on the other hand, was more focused on NU getting its first conference win of the season and beating Michigan, which he considers to be a major rival. It was only fitting that Cysewski, who will step down with the most wins in NU history, ended his head coaching career with a victory.
“It’s been a hard year, and we’ve faced a lot of injuries,” Mele said. “We just wanted to pull together with a strong purpose, especially in Tim’s last dual as head coach. That made the difference.”

Mele, Roddy Victorious in NU's Loss at Wisconsin Friday
Large crowd expected in Evanston for Tim Cysewski's final home match as head coach

Excerpts:
MADISON, Wis. -- In its final road dual match of the season, Northwestern received individual victories from first-year starters Levi Mele (125) and Brian Roddy, Jr. (174) in a 32-6 loss at No. 19 Wisconsin Friday in Madison. Roddy, a redshirt freshman, is 3-3 in his first Big Ten dual season and 9-7 overall for the 'Cats.

The Wildcats now have just one regular season dual match remaining before the start of championship season. NU hosts Michigan at 6 p.m. Sunday in a match that will be televised live by the Big Ten Network. For Northwestern's head coach of 20 years Tim Cysewski, it is the final dual contest before Cysewski switches roles to become associate head coach next season.

Mele opened the night on a positive note for the Wildcats with his 8-4 decision over Wisconsin's Drew Hammen, Mele's second Big Ten victory of the year. The second period was the critical one for Mele, who scored six points on two reversals and a two-point near-fall in the middle stanza to take control of the bout. Hammen scored one late takedown but the NU freshman held on for the win.

No. 1 Iowa Overpowers Northwestern in Iowa City
Wildcats now prepare for final weekend of regular season competition

Excerpts:
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern gave it their all Friday night, but No. 1-ranked Iowa's seven top-10 wrestlers proved too much to overcome as the Hawkeyes claimed a 49-0 dual win in front of a crowd of 7,125 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. It was the first time Northwestern was held scoreless in a dual match since Nov. 24, 2000.

Undefeated Iowa (20-0, 5-0) used five pins, four of which came in the first period, to amass their final margin of victory. The Hawkeyes now have won three consecutive matches by shutout and have won 32 consecutive dual bouts.

Prior to the start of the match, the host Hawkeyes put the center-mat spotlight on Northwestern head coach Tim Cysewski, honoring the 1977 Iowa graduate and former head of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club who at the end of the season will relinquish his duties as head coach after 20 years at the helm in Evanston.

After a fall by Iowa's Matt McDonough to the open the match at 125, NU senior Eric Metzler competed hard against Iowa's Daniel Dennis before falling in a 12-3 decision. Metzler displayed great skill on defense against the nation's No. 3-ranked wrestler and took his own shots on offense, but could never secure a takedown to truly threaten the Hawkeye's advantage.

Northwestern moves to 5-10-1 on the year and 0-5 in the Big Ten with the loss, while the Buckeyes improved to 16-1 overall, 5-0 in conference.

Earlier in the day, Ohio State got off to a quick start with a pin by Nikko Triggas at 125 pounds with nine seconds remaining in the first period against NU's Levi Mele.

Gritty Wildcats Win Three Bouts in 37-10 Loss at Penn State
Roddy improves to 2-1 in conference, Metzler now 2-2 in Big Ten
Excerpts:
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- With a crippling snowstorm blanketing the campus of Penn State and the surrounding area, Northwestern and the 12th-ranked Nittany Lions squared off in Rec Hall in front of nearly 4,000 brave wrestling fans as PSU won a 37-10 decision Friday night. NU's wins came courtesy of Eric Metzler, Brian Roddy, Jr. and John Schoen, who won by 13-4 major decision at 197.

The Nittany Lions (11-5-1, 3-2) captured six of the nine contested bouts--with Northwestern (5-9-1, 0-4) being forced to forfeit the 10th at 141 pounds--and used the bonus points from two pins and a tech fall to open up its 27-point margin of victory. All six Penn State wrestlers who won matches Friday night are ranked at least as high as No. 13 in the nation at their respective weight classes.

With the dual season entering the home stretch, the Wildcats have set their sights squarely on the goal of winning each individual match to improve their seeding at the fast-approaching Big Ten Championships on March 6-7. Metzler, Roddy and Schoen each took a big step toward accomplishing that with wins on Friday against a PSU team coached by arguably the most successful college wrestler of all time in undefeated four-time NCAA champion Cael Sanderson.

Following a tech fall win by Penn State's Brad Pataky at 125, Metzler took on Bryan Pearsall and was able to gain a 4-2 lead in the second period with a quality reversal. Pearsall tied things up at four with a takedown in the third, but Metzler scored a one-point escape before notching a critical takedown to seize a lead he would not relinquish. Metzler improves to 2-2 in conference action with the victory.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern (5-7-1) won decisions in two of the first three contested bouts but ultimately fell by a score of 31-9 against No. 11 Indiana (12-1) Sunday afternoon in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Redshirt freshman Brian Roddy, Jr. posted a 6-4 win at 174 over IU's Trevor Perry, who came into Sunday with an 11-1 dual record and who had defeated Roddy in their previous two meetings.

The dual meet began at 125 pounds where NU true freshman Levi Mele took on Indiana's Angel Escobedo, the nation's No. 1-ranked 125-pounder and a 2008 NCAA champion. Escobedo jumped ahead in the first period with three near-fall points and ended things with a pin at the 3:47 mark of the match, helping the Hoosier remain perfect at 24-0 on the year.

DALLAS, Texas -- Northwestern got off to a winning start during its trip to the Lone Star Duals tournament Saturday by downing Air Force, 26-15, thanks to a run of six straight victories between 149 and 197 pounds. The 'Cats lost their ensuing match against No. 11 Oklahoma before rallying for a 23-18 victory over Brown--despite spotting the Bears 12 team points due to forfeits--thanks in part to freshman Marcus Shrewsbury's overtime win in the final bout.

Lacking a 125-pounder and a true heavyweight during Saturday's matches due to injuries, Northwestern (4-6-1) made certain to pick up the slack at the middle weights against Air Force beginning with Eric Metzler's 9-1 victory over Tyler Untrauer at 133 pounds. Metzler was able to amass 1:07 in riding time to extend his final winning margin to the eight points necessary to qualify for a major decision.
